I have some new things to say about the problem : (1) I'm using the radeon driver, not fglrx ; (2) the problem occurs with 2.6.17-10.28 and 2.6.17-10.29 (3) but not with my trusty 2.6.15-27.48 (I upgraded from dapper recently)
