Thank you Lydia for your answer, that was more or less the problem I was 
reporting.
I don't know if it is the intended behaviour, but to me it seems very 
uncomfortable to set the message every time I change my status.
But, if it is the intended behaviour, then comes the second part of the problem.
The status message disappear at the first status change, but only in the local 
application (i.e. it is still "shouted" to my contacts, and visible to them), 
and it need a second status change to make it "really" disappear. This happens 
with different "remote" applications (for example msn messenger on windows, and 
adium on mac) and different protocols (msn and jabber) so it makes me believe 
that this problem is in kopete.
I hope to have been clearer, it is a complicated problem to explain :)
