Problems with my Dell Latitude D520 too. -- I installed xrandr and grandr... cloning works (allthough the menu bar on the notebook display renders to the screen size of the monitor display), but I cannot get extended desktop enabled, not with xrandr cli, -- Using grandr gui tool, I see the radio button "clone <-> extend" disabled...
