This bit in the .old log looks suspicious:

II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
(II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

(II) fglrx(0): Shutdown CMMQS
(EE) fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0x5680000 at 0xb7f3c000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] Closed DRM master.

The other logs don't show it though, so perhaps it's coincidental.

I notice you're running XAA; have you tried using EXA instead? (I'm not
sure if -fglrx uses EXA, but the acceleration type often has a
performance impact.
