It seems to be fixed now.
I logged into the test account then logged back out again. And could type my 
account and pass in to restore my old session. Where as before this would spawn 
me a new session that didn't work right rather than giving my my old one.

By the looks of it the X server doesn't seem to restart anymore on
logout. Maybe the "restart" was actually a "crash" in gutsy. But I
didn't notice any strange messages in the xOrg logs or the other logs.


I vote for problem solved. Dunno when/where but it is working in hardy now. My 
desktops at home are running gusty still so I'll have to try one of them first.
