I got almost exactly the same crash when upgrading a small number (~20)
of packages. Attached is the traceback. update-manager continued to run
normally and completed the upgrade.

I had just changed /etc/apt/sources.list (using the Software Sources
applet) to include one of these lines:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates restricted main multiverse 
universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-proposed restricted main multiverse 
universe

but I forget which one. According to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash Hardy shouldn't have
either of those repositories yet?
