Yes. I just checked /var/log/dpkg.log, and it says:
2006-10-06 14:40:09 status installed evolution-data-server 1.8.1-0ubuntu2 I've rebooted since then. That said, I just upgraded all available packages, and it's suddenly working without the script. I would therefore suggest that some other dependency is making the difference... sound feasible? If you like, I can send you my dpkg.log.
