As suspected in my case, it seems that the beta's 2.6.24-12 does not play nicely with lvm, or vice versa. Booting with 2.6.22-14 works. (I should warn that the first part is my very tired impression, and I will have to sanity-check that theory when I have a chance. Right now I just want to document the workaround for anyone else who just hosed their system.)
