After upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04beta I had the same problem. Creating a
/dev/dvd symlink fixed the problem. HOWEVER, it seems like neither
Kaffeine nor Ubuntu are doing due diligence here:

First, Kaffeine's method of finding DVD drives obviously isn't smart at
all. Second, this latest version of the player is incorrectly starting
(each time it is run) an install process for libdvdcss2 after it cannot
find the drive, making the user think that the player or the library CSS
support is fundamentally broken when all the player needs is the correct
drive path.

Third, its seems like Ubuntu should stick to some standard nomenclature
for CD and DVD device paths (which keeps changing and changing yet again
for each new Ubuntu release).
