I really think its an compiz bug, disabling the compiz animation plugin fixed it.
I had the same issue with Ubuntu Edgy and compiz, but never with beryl. Also I have the same effect when using an ATI x800 based video card and radeon or fglrx video drivers. I also suggest labeling this as a bug in compiz. Bug is not reproducable, leaving the PC idle for some time seems to increase the probability. I have subscribed this launchpad entry, so if I can do something for a developer (e.g. get logs or try patches), please post here.
