The sudo+hostname bug/inconvenience happened to me. I hosed my hosts file when upgrading from 7.04 to 8.04. Sudo didn't want to do anything, but gksudo worked fine. The network-dependent sudo failed, but the X11-dependent gksudo was OK. Redundancy saves the day.
