The same version (binary) from the website work without problem. Nevertheless, when trying to compile from the original source, I discovered that cx_freeze is needed to make binaries. As it does seem to be not available in ubuntu, the ubuntu package only contains the source .py files, which can be used directly, but are much slower. That's why the game is so slow.
