I can confirm this (IXUS 55 and EOS 20D). Workaround proposed is good enough to get access to the pictures as a "normal" user. However, it does not fix the automount problem I have - configuration in "System/Preferences/Removable Drives and Media/Digital Camera" does not have any effect - configured app is not starting automatically when camera is connected.
