Installed again using XUbuntu 8.04 beta. Problem persist, although the
"Screen and Graphics preferences" application moved to another menu.

After installation I had 1152 x 864 resolution, but selecting my monitor
from the list (still Nokia 445 Xi) messes things up. When X Window next
starts, seems it on the fourth start pops up "Ubuntu is running in low-
graphics mode" dialog box and even pressing configure and trying to
change stuff all I get is 800x600 max resolution.

In my opinion Screen and Graphics Preferences application just messes up
X Window configuration.
