In this Mozilla developers blog[1], he talk about pixman library being
slow and being optimized at the moment. He says Linux will have to wait
for the speed improvements until the X server is upgraded.

I am guessing here, but at least it could explain why Firefox is fast in
Windows and not in Ubuntu, and also why Opera is fast on Linux as they
use their own pixel manipulation code.
