I edited ~/gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/%gconf.xml end changed /usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/metacity This disables desktop-effects.
It now works with all open source and proprietary drivers. I noticed that the fan of my notebook stays off now.
