I've had the same problem after upgrading to Hardy. GNOME was crashing the X server every time. Applying the patch from http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/xserver.git;a=commitdiff;h=7018f280406eb0ef899a4046de274cfdd582881b;hp=66f8001b61d12eaf4905ac71ccbb3f304914d00d as mentioned in http://www.mail- archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg74082.html to the source package solved the problem.
