Yet more info (hope this isn't getting too much)

'ls -l /dev/lir*' produces:
crw-rw---- 1 root root 61, 0 2008-03-22 11:34 /dev/lirc0
srw-rw-rw- 1 root root     0 2008-03-22 11:41 /dev/lircd

Running gksudo 'xmode2 -d /dev/lircd' as opposed to gksudo 'xmode2 -d 
/dev/lirc0' produces:
xmode2: No such device or address
xmode2: error opening /dev/lircd

COM1 (IRQ 4) is definitely the right port for it to be looking at.
