Yes, that does sound like a kernel issue.  I would recommend sending it
to Debian's bug tracker and continuing to follow up there.  For
encouragement, I was able to find someone who _can_ access your Tungsten
E as a USB drive, but using proprietary software called Card Export II.

I'm going to go ahead and close this bug though.  If you switch back to
Ubuntu and still can't get it to work, open this bug back up and we'll
be glad to help you more.  Good luck!
