Just to add.
I think I can nail down the problem a bit more.
I had an older version of java installed on my Gutsy install, and tried
to install a new version. Firefox prompted me to install about 4
different things. The only one that works in the official Sun Java
plugin. But I installed the GCJ Web plugin, this caused the symptoms
described above.
