It appears that a recent update fixed the issues, since the fan is working 
again. In 
the past few days I saw a acpi-support package in the Update Manager, maybe 
this 
fixed it. With the power unplugged the fan did work, very strange, but now it 
works 
again with the power plugged in. I remember having the same issue with a very 
early alpha of Ubuntu 8.04, but I didn't report it back then.
