Binary package hint: update-manager

When trying to update the distribution from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 (alpha
6) using update-manager -d,

It passes the first phase (preparing to upgrade) , but hangs in the
second phase(status show checking up for changes)...

Also the window goes blank, in such a way that no clue of what's
happening.

When i tried in an another machine,, it got upgraded(it was a freshly
installed)..

I have lots of languages/packages/libraries which are compiled from
source....
