I'm having what looks like a pretty similar problem. When I select "hibernate", the screen goes black and then prints some text that looks rather like this:
[ 847.068788] drm_sysfs_suspend [ 858.779243] i8042 kbd 00:09:activation failed If I press ctrl+alt+f1, I get a text-based login console, but can't do anything with it. If I press ctrl+alt+f7, the screen goes blank and I can't do anything - even pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. The only way to rescue the computer from this is to do a hard reset.
