Running "update-initramfs -k 2.6.24-12-generic -u" fixed the problem for
me. Anyone who can run the 386 kernel but not the generic kernel should
try that; not sure why it isn't done automatically when the kernel is
upgraded.

By the way, how to unsubscribe from a bug? My inbox is overflowing :)
