Hi Newlinus,

Well, the Ubuntu folks never got back to me, but I found another solution
that is quite simple. I installed the Mandriva 2008.1 beta edition, and it
turned out to have all the drivers I needed. Don't be scared away by the
"beta" designation in this case. I've been running Mandriva 2008.1 for
several weeks now, and put all of the applications to the test, and I
haven't had a single error, crash, or lock-up. In fact, so far at least,
it's the most stable OS I've used. The only hassle I've found is that if
you want to run skype, you have to open the terminal window and type in
"pasuspender skype" (because skype is designed to run on the ALSA sound
drivers and Mandriva uses the more stable Pulse Audio drivers). But once
you do that, skype works perfectly as well.

An added convenience is that Mandriva has a web-based tool to install all of
the software sources you may want. Google "easy urpmi" and you will find
the site. Since you're running the beta edition, choose "cooker" and "i586"
as your platform. Mandriva's 64-bit version of 2008.1 is not out yet. Once
you've done that, just follow the instructions. But be sure to check the
box that will give you the short descriptions of programs--it will make your
updates and downloads run much quicker. Once your sources are updated,
Mandriva has an easy tool, like Ubuntu, to install the applications you want
(win32codecs, libdvdcss2, etc.)

Hope this helps. Feel free to email again if you have any questions about
the installation. I think you'll find it smooth sailing from here. Oh, by
the way, I tried both the Gnome and KDE versions, and work just fine, so
pick your favorite with no worries.

Good luck!

Kyle
