Retested with Hardy Alpha 6 with latest updates as of 2008-MAR-09
(kernel 2.6.24-12-generic). Same result. The fan was functioning
during the Alternate i386 installation but not after the reboot. I
presume that the installer disables ACPI and APM then takes over the fan
operation. With ACPI active the CPU throttles down to 600MHz as the
temperature approaches 60°. With ACPI disabled the CPU operates at
1.6GHz with the fan operating but I can't verify the temperature as the
sensor is not available without ACPI.
