Some more information on this bug. I installed krita-kde4 and tried to start it in my kde3-session, which leads to the above stated error message. If I open an kde4-session, krita-kde4 starts without any problem. When I switch back to the kde3-session, I can start krita-kde4 without any error message.
So I think there are some processes not running or some initialisation is missing if you try to run krita-kde4 within a kde3 session.
