"clocksource=acpi_pm", "highres=off" and updating BIOS had no effect.

however, i ran "sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-
image-2.6.24-8-generic linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-8-generic linux-
ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-8-generic", and now it works....  could the
generated initrd image have been bad?  or ?!?
