FIXED!!! Oh man, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. What I did was copy from my existing working Feisty install nv_drv.so to the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers on the Gutsy machine.
Bingo. Ahhhh... so nice. I'm more of a cookbook compiler based on the recommendations of others so I don't know how I could help there. I did some quick searching and saw that someone else had done this to an ATI driver, although I don't think it was related to Ubuntu. I was mistaken also in that it did affect gdm as well. I was just masking it using a plain-jane login screen. At least it shows that it is the NV driver for sure, and I'm a very happy camper right now using the Feisty nv driver on Gutsy. I'll have to try this feisty nv driver on Hardy in a few days.
