This appears to be fixed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9.1
No more problem with hibernate, no more problem with suspend. The screen is restored fine. However I now have a problem with screen refresh. I can not improve the refresh rate above 60 Hz (monitor: HP 7540).
