I installed ubuntu 7.10 a couple of days ago and had the same problem described above. The width of the columns in vertical view was not remembered as long as the window was maximized.
Then I altered the width of the columns while the window was not maximized. Then the width of the columns was remembered correctly. The strange thing is, that it now works with maximized window as well. So in my opinion the bug is not solved yet.
