I have just upgraded my system to ubuntu hardy with kernel 2.6.24-11-powerpc and i can confirm that the harddrive is detected during boot. However /dev/hda3 was not created and i had to create it manually with "mknod /dev/hda3 b 3 3" when dropped to initramfs shell. After exiting initramfs shell booting proceeded as normal.
