Do you still experience this problem? If so, please attach your /usr/sbin/update-grub file (for reference), then add the "-x -v" parameters to the shebang line, which would currently result in "#!/bin/bash -x -v" and then try to run "sudo update-grub" again. This should then provide the output needed, to find the bug in the script, so please paste the output here.
