It's important to note that if you have two laptops, one running XP, one running Ubuntu and you let them run down doing nothing. Although the XP laptop will report a longer battery time, it in fact runs down at the same time as the Ubuntu laptop.
I have noticed the times get closer and closer together as the time runs out, until both had the same time.
