Public bug reported:

Create a new file (in Writer or Calc), type a few words and click save (either
menu or toolbar).
Save dialog opens with Directory /home/username/Documents selected as default.
Enter file name and click Save button. OpenOffice closes and crash report
dialog opens.

The fault appears to be the default "Documents" directory which has
permissions 700. If you change the save directory say to /home/username
or /home/username/some_new_directory_I_just_created (with permissions
755) save operation works fine.

Changing permissions of the Documents directory to 755 does not prevent
OpenOffice crashing!!

Anyway - its a bug.
Openoffice crashing disgracefully instead of displaying a "you don't have
permission dialog" may be for Openoffice.

Getting default settings right so that the whole Ubuntu / Openoffice thing
works "out of the box" is presumably yours.
