If you are inexperienced, then it's probably not worth it to upgrade to
Hardy ("hardy heron", which will become 8.04 in April) yet.
but you could run this command on a terminal (gnome-terminal or similar):
'apt-cache policy nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-new nvidia-glx-legacy'
and paste the result here.
the "desktop sucks the window" would suggest that the game crashes
("sucking" closed windows is an effect of the compiz window manager...).
You could also start the game from a terminal and when the game crashes
you'll see an error message in the terminal. Copy-paste it here as well.
