Thanks for taking your time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, this doesn't seem to be a Bug in ubuntu. If, as you said, the problem persists when gnome-splashscreen-manager is removed, it's likely that the chosen splash screen broke your setup. I'll close this bug, since there is nothing we can do about it. Note that you can disable your splash screen via a terminal: gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-session/options/show_splash_screen --type boolean "false"
