I think this is very likely to be fixed now. The screensaver is poked every 30 seconds from a timeout in the GTK main loop; indeed this was also the case when James filed this bug. However, in Dapper, the way Ubiquity interacted with gparted involved blocking reads from a file descriptor, not via the GTK main loop. This would mean that if gparted took too long to format partitions then the screensaver could kick in.
