OK, it seems to be a bug with MBP or something which is build in MBP (EFI?) because I have a MBP with nvidia graphics (nvidia 8600 GT in MBP rev3, you should have rev2) and the same issue like you. I know that's possible to install nvidia css drivers, but nv trivers also work in gutsy, so it should be possible to get them working in hardy, too. And that vesa completely fails is somehow ... bad. Something a linux newbie will never solve ...
