This is resolved in Hardy by (a) checking for sufficient free space before installation and (b) removing directories from the target system that would interfere with installation (and of course warning you about this).
To upgrade from Ubuntu 5.10 to Ubuntu 6.06, the preferred and supported method is to use the standard upgrade tools.
