Same thing happened to me on ubuntu 8.04 alpha 5. Dell XPS laptop with Wireless 
1350 WLAN MiniPCI Card
I was running alpha 5 just fine. (wireless didnt' work for some reason showed 
some networks wouldn't connect to mine WPA Personal PSK) 
I ran updates (wired update) and then now it won't boot. it stops at white 
screen like it tries to load desktop, then when i hit the power button it gave 
me that error while it was shutting down.
So now it won't boot after running today's updates. 27 feb
