Wolfgang, Thanks for all your help. I downloaded the .deb and installed it. I am very happy to have my elapsed time back on display again! I did recompile the package with changes in gnome-ppp.c. I also replaced the semicolon with a pound sign/sharp symbol at line 827. This takes care of the corruption issue I had with .wvdial.conf. The # makes wvdial see the entire line as a comment and it gets ignored but it is still there to remind users not to change any of the data in the file.
I would still like to play with the corrected source code as I see the connected window does not have a minimize button in the title bar. Having one would add a nice touch to the overall appeal of the application. Thanks again for your time and trouble!
