I must also agree with Ben's comment & explanation. I use Gutsy on a laptop with the 8.2 Catalyst drivers manually installed and suspend and hiberanate with no problems at all.
I've checked the Hardy repos and if I'm correct they've included 8.2 Catalyst drivers - so problem solved.
