I see, thanks for clarifying that bit.  The diff as it is is far too large
to review and takes some time even to eyeball, but trimming those bits helps
a lot.

Let's go ahead with the update.

When we're in a freeze period, especially post-beta, "it works for me" is no
longer sufficient justification for an update.

I'll be expanding the documentation on this point in the near future.
