Greg, -- small update. I caused this problem by adding a number of sources to my Synaptic sources.list -- somehow a program called Busybox got installed in such a way that I couldn't restart the system, or even shut it down all the way to power-off. I wound up holding the reboot button on the PC case until the power went off, then rebooting. At that point it progressed from the GRUB screen through the initial Ubuntu splash screen, then dropped me to a prompt that said something like "job control not active" and gave me a busybox prompt that I never managed to figure out. -- Since this was a fresh system build, I wound up simply rebuilding the system from the CD. My best guess is that I enabled a pathological mix of sources and tried to install something (don't have the name handy) that needed to overwrite another packages file by the same name. -- in other words, user error from start to finish.
