I installed AVG and had the same problem. You need to add your user to the avg group. Go to system -> Administration (I think - my ubuntu desktop isn't infront of me) -> Users + Groups.
In the window that appears click on manage groups and add your user to the avg group. You will need to log out (+ possibly restart) your machine for the change to take affect.
