** Summary changed:

- Ubuntu graphical boot uses too high horizontal frequency (LCD display problem)
+ Radeon 9200 SE "not synchronised signal" with usplash and consoles

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 6.10, x86

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 to PC with LCD monitor (HP LP1965) that supports
  native resolution 1280x1024, 60Hz.

- My graphic card is ATI 9200SE,
-
  # lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200
SE] (rev 01)

During graphical Ubuntu boot, LCD monitor cannot handle video signal,
- frequency is probably too high (higher than 60Hz).
+ frequency is probably too high (higher than 60Hz). I get "not
+ synchronised signal"

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 6.06.1 but that was installed with
analog monitor so I met problem after monitor change; Ubuntu had no
- change to detect LCD monitor and configure Ubuntu in proper way.
+ change to detect LCD monitor and configure Ubuntu in proper way. When
+ booting with usplash or when trying to access any console, I get "not
+ synchronised signal"

I think that Ubuntu should detect that LCD monitor is installed during
install and configure kernel for LCD display. Or to use lower monitor
frequency during Linux boot by default.

It is possible to fix the problem by adding a parameter for kernel (vga=791),
like this line in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
  # defoptions=quiet splash vga=791

It has to be done manually and "update-grub" updates kernel lines in
menu.lst;
Ubuntu cannot do this during install, it is a bug from my point of view.
