The problem is consistently reproducible on a macbook pro running hardy with the background image of http://www.slackware.com. driver is fglrx. Another machine running glx and a fresh install. Intel chips seem unaffected. I would imagine that this has to do with a mismatch in where the image is stored and retrieved from but its purely speculation.
