This is caused by one or more files in ~/.sane having their owner set to
root, due to xsane having been run as root at some point in the past.
Fixing the permissions or clearing out the files removes the error
messages (I just removed the entire directory, then reran xsane to
create a new one).

Not really a bug per se, but a poster child for lousy error messages.
