I got the same issue with Hardy A4, I have: 01:01.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1) and hardy boots to a blank screen, I have to alt ctrl f1 and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to fix the issue...
